The building was built in the 1730s. At that time it was a storehouse for the navy’s barrels for fresh water, and later also the premises for the navy’s barrel maker’s workshop. The building was rebuilt in 1826-27 to become an artillery workshop. In 1851, a steam engine was brought to the building. After the introduction of naval mines in 1853, the Mines Department, a naval unit responsible for the manufacture and maintenance of mines, was established in the building.
